Stefan Lovgren began working as a journalist in the mid-1990s after graduating with a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University in New York. His interest in Africa was fueled by extended travels through east and southern Africa in the early 1990s. As a young reporter determined to make his mark, he searched out the most dangerous locales he could find, covering civil wars in places like Burundi and Algeria.

After a four-year stint as a special Africa correspondent for US & News World Report magazine, Stefan transitioned into television. At a time of change in journalism, he learned how to operate as a one-man crew -- writing, filming, producing and editing news stories from around Africa.

He also directed and co-wrote “Doing Good,” a satire about selfish expatriates in Africa. The film, made on a $500 budget (yes, it shows!) and starring the real-life journalists and aid workers in Kenya, was a hit on Kenyan Television.

After relocating to Los Angeles, Stefan began working for National Geographic in various capacities in television and print. Independently, he wrote, produced and directed a documentary about the rare mountain gorillas in the Congo, “Return to Virunga.” He has written several screenplays, including “Rift Valley,” about the FBI investigation into the mysterious death of an American priest in Kenya.

An avid soccer fan and player, Stefan covered the last three World Cups. Beginning in 2009, he has been working on a long-term documentary project about soccer in Africa, “Africa’s Game.”

Stefan is based in Los Angeles and Sonora, CA, where he lives with his wife and family. His three sons have promised to one day fulfill the professional soccer ambitions their father, surprisingly, never achieved.
